In this course you will learn basics of classical improvisation for piano & organ:

  • harmonization and figuration of the basic bass patterns of the 18th century
  • figured bass notation
  • improvisation of short preludes and variations on a given theme using models like: cadence, sequences (rising and falling 5ths), chaconne and passacaglia (major and minor tetrachord), pedal point and …. mixture of all of this 🙂

The course includes:

  • 14 online lessons via Zoom (each lesson will be recorded and available as a video for later viewing)
  • PDF workbook for each lesson
  • Bonus: an extra hour per week answering questions, giving feedback, practicing together (extra 14  hours included in the course price)

Requirements for the course:

  • a minimum of one year of playing the piano, organ or other keyboard instruments
  • some experience in the baroque and classical repertoire (e.g., the ability to play a small prelude in C Major by Bach, BWV 939)

In this course you will learn:

  • harmonization of chorales
  • improvisation of choral partita, using variation techniques like Böhm, Fischer, Händel, Pachelbel
  • short chorale preludes with the performance of the chorale melody in different voices (cantus firmus in sopran, alt, tenor, bass)

 

The course includes:

  • 7 online lessons via Zoom (each lesson will be recorded and available as a video for later viewing)
  • PDF workbook for each lesson
  • Bonus: an extra hour per week answering questions, giving feedback, practicing together (extra 7  hours included in the course price)

 

Requirements for the course:

Szymon Jakubowski

Szymon Jakubowski, born in Poland in 1981, is a pianist, organist and improviser. Since 2001 he lives in Berlin (Germany) where he studied piano, organ and improvisation at the Hanns Eisler University of Music and University of the Arts Berlin. Since many years, as a laureate of piano and organ improvisation competitions, he actively performs concerts which are mostly based on classical improvisation. In addition to his concert activities, Szymon Jakubowski has many years of educational experience. He is currently teaching practical piano skills at the Leipzig University of Music and Theater and organ improvisation at the University of Arts in Berlin.
